Speed Reading: Golden Rules for Students to Academic Success

Speed Reading: Golden Rules for Students to Academic Success

As students progress with their learning up the academic ladder, their reading materials tend to increase in bulk and complexity. This leaves them with merely little time, especially for college students, to master and grab their reading from huge chunks of reading materials.

According to a research conducted by the University of Utah, the average college students reads at an average speed of 350 words per minute. This reading rate at a university level is quite problematic, as students are required to complete vast amounts of reading in short time. The University further suggest a much more realistic target of a reading rate of 500 to 700 words per minute for college students in order for them to attain success in college.

Speed reading is, therefore, a vital technique which every student should learn to be able to effectively cope up with the vast amounts of reading materials that they are expected to cover in relatively short spans, especially while in college.

Speed Reading: A Great Study Technique

Speed reading entails using any of the several techniques available to improve one’s ability to read quickly. Learning speed reading as a study technique is very important as it helps one be able to complete all assigned readings, a great benefit, and a step ahead to success in your college education. It has also been demonstrated that speed reading greatly enhances the comprehension rates for many students. Students tend to lose track and focus when their reading progresses at a slow rate. Reading at a fast rate enables one to easily capture the “big picture” and prevents the brain from losing attention. This makes students to better understand and remember small supporting details.

Early reading instructions in schools have taught students to focus more on accuracy, while later reading exercises, especially in tertiary education, are designed to build vocabulary and comprehension. As a result, students tend to acquire slow reading habits. Speed reading training is necessary and appropriate for students upon gaining fluency and a wide command of vocabulary. Learning speed reading can greatly help students, especially those that have acquired habits that put brakes on their reading process such as reading aloud and re-reading of words and sentences, break these habits and be more efficient in rapid reading with excellent comprehension.
